FOF #325 - Proud to be Takei - 06.08.06

Proudly going where no other Star Trek actor had gone before George Takei got back into the national spotlight last year when "beamed" out of the closet as a openly gay man and spoke candidly about his 19-year relationship with his life partner Brad Altman.
On today's show we'll be talking with actor George Takei who's best known for playing the role of Mr. Sulu on the original Star Trek television seires and in six subsequent Star Trek films.
George Takei makes his podcast debut as he joins us today to talk about the 40 year anniversary of star trek, his personal experience as a gay man in hollywood, why he came out, and why Howard Stern was able to trick George into thinking he was arguing with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
If you live in Chicagoland area, be sure to come out to the Pride Parade on Sunday June 25 where George Takei and his partner Brad Altman will be the grand marshalls.
The parade starts at noon at the corner of Halsted and Belmont, be sure to check us out too. We'll give you something really special!

Fausto and Marc... you really hit the jackpot here. George Takei was a DELIGHTFUL guest, and you were FANTASTIC interviewers. I enjoyed this interview IMMENSELY. :) :) :) Hats off to you, and to George for being such a wonderful inspiration to all people still wondering whether or not they should come out. Congrats. :)

As a long time Star Trek fan, this was fantastic. Fausto and Marc, you have delivered some of the best guests in the podcast-o-sphere but this was probably the best. I particularly found interesting where George took you both on about gay or straight actors playing gay or straight roles. As a straight supporter of the gay community, this is an area I have been a little fuzzy on concerning the stances some gays would take on it. It’s just acting but at the same time, homosexuals should be treated as just another part of society (as opposed to something that needs to be hidden away). This show was thought provoking and entertaining.

Oh my Gawd! Fausto and Marc, this show just shot up the charts to become my all time favorite podcast interview ever!
I sat here enraptured, cycling between chills and tears during the whole thing. I have been a huge Star Trek fan since I was old enough to watch television and this interview brought all the excitement of TOS back to me in spades.
George is so so charming, intelligent, engaging, funny and delightful.... really, I loved every minute of it!
I've never told this story, but you know that episode when Sulu was a shirtless crazy sword guy was one of the first times I felt same sex attraction. It's so wonderful to know that he plays for our team.

WOW! You boys did it again! The interview with George was fantastic (and so damn clear!)!
Mark this one up for the archives! I LOVED the end music! Had me laughing as I got off of the train this morning!
Thanks again guys! Happy Pride! It's LA Pride this weekend and my dance card is FULL with kinky demos, marching in the parade, and fun!
Chat you later!
Keepin it kinky,

I love Star Trek, I love the Feast of Fools, and I love Marc, Fausto and George together talking away! Can they put the three of them on a new starship and make it a gay ship?
Best Podcast Ever!

George Takei is going to be at Pride???? I CAN'T WAIT!!! See everyone on Sunday June 25th -- we planned our canadian honeymoon so we'd be back in Chicago in time for Pride. Woo hoo!
Said by: Maia at June 8, 2006 11:21 AM
I am so hot for George Takei now! Fantastic interview, guys. My favorite moment was hearing him say 'nipples'. Can't wait to see him and Brad in the parade this year.
Said by: john s at June 8, 2006 11:53 AM
That interview was particularly delicious.
I love Takei's eloquence and enunciation. I also love that you guys researched the crap out of him before you interviewed him so you could ask him such wonderful questions. Thanks for putting all this together.
That Sulu dance at the end was crazyness too.
Said by: epilonious at June 8, 2006 12:03 PM
I have to agree -- this was an especially tasty podcast.
George Takei has a gorgeous voice! I could listen to him say "piano" all day.
Thanks for the wonderful interview, and for adding a little Star Trek pride to pride month. I will proudly admit to being an avid fan (of The Next Generation). I don't think I would have made it through those long, dark Alaskan winters without Star Trek reruns every day at 5:00 pm. Intergalactic, idealistic utopianism: it's a beautiful thing, isn't it?
Oh yeah, and Deanna Troi in those thigh-high boots.
Said by: Maia at June 8, 2006 02:42 PM
I would so love it if Russell T Davies got George Takei to do a cameo in the next season of Dr. Who.
Said by: Dave at June 8, 2006 02:48 PM
Stop talking about the pics if we don't get to see them...seriously...for real!
Said by: Navid at June 8, 2006 03:10 PM
Great idea re: Russel Teeee.
I love Dr.Who (Eccleston)
Eccleston was an alien. "Humans are nice but, I'll kill the last one wihtout blinking."
Now that's a real, powerful alien with a mild interest in Earth.
He has bigger gays to enjoy ;)
Oh, sigh, why did Ec leave and why won't he return...
*sigh*
Anyhow, so er, where was I?
Fausto, yes fab, wonderful, blue alien er - etc...
Serz though, fanatstic show. A sign of things to come!
Shortly we won't be able to engage the boys :S they will be too famous...!
Love it while it last InterBabies! (just like we loved Ecclestone while he acted)

As a gay Asian American man, thank you so much for this interview. George Takei makes me proud of who I am.

This was one of the best interviews I've heard on ANY podcast... George Takei was great! I lost it when he asked to see the pictures of Marc and Fausto in their Star Fleet outfits having sex..... The people I work with at a "major insurance company" in Bloomington, IL were staring at me while I was laughing and snickering throughout the entire interview... Thank you and keep up the good work. It is shows like this take keep you on top!

A delight as always. Thank you for providing such a well-rounded experience of fun, silliness, intelligence, and loads of food for thought. Your interview with George Takei was stellar. You did your homework and it shows. Your listeners appreciate that and so do your guests. Keep it up!!

Fausto & Marc - Awesome show guys. Maybe your best one yet! I'm a huge Star Trek fan -- yes i'm a Trekkie geek. But not the stalker kind. Anyway, I had a crush on Sulu aka George when I was young. I've always loved the fencing scene.
He was such a doll on your show yesterday. It was great to hear him talk about his life. And you guys did such a great job with the interview.
Anyway, more Star Trek and more FoF. Thanks guys. Love the show.

I want to see Marc, Fausto and George Takei on the next season of Dr. Who. I'll start the letter writing campaign right now.
Said by: Daryl at June 9, 2006 03:43 PM
Hi guys. I just got finished listening to the podcast. I'm not gonna repeat what's been said, you guys are gold, you struck gold and everything was amazing.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bjo Trimble a few years ago. She was the woman that started that letter writing campaign that George spoke of that brought back Star Trek for third season and therefore allowed it to go into syndication. Do you know if it had never had the third season there would not have been the reruns and the cult would have never taken off? I wish I had her contact info but I don't. She would be a fascinating guest for you guys. She had the most amazing stories. She once said that she had asked Gene Roddenberry why there were no gay people on the Enterprise and his reply was something like... how do you know there aren't. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there.
Congratulations on another amazing show.
Much love and puppy treats,

The reason Star Trek is so popular with us gay folks is the Utopian ideals represented. Gene Rodenberry envisioned a world where there were no prejudices, and no war amongst the races of Earth. We had “evolved” beyond our warlike tendencies. Perhaps we gays as a culture who endure bigotry and hatred toward our kind see this ideal as something our world’s society should strive to emulate. But then it wouldn’t be a Utopian ideal, would it? That’s not to say that Star Trek did not have prejudices and biases portrayed in its stories. Those biases and conflicts were elevated to an interplanetary level instead. The Humans and other alien races of the United Federation of Planets were at odds with other empires such as the Klingon Empire. That’s one opinion and I’m sticking to it.
Now here’s the more likely reason. Maybe it was the fashion that the people wore. Especially in the later variations of the Star Trek universe. Star Trek the Motion Picture introduced fashions which were smooth, skin tight, and void of panty lines. What gay boy wouldn’t be caught ogling young Wesley of Star Trek: TNG’s firm round buttocks in his star fleet uniform? You get my drift. The fashion left very little to the imagination. When it boils down to everything is about sex.

love the interview. I never reliesed how nice George Takei's voice really is. I loved the questions asked and I feel I got to learn a lot about him, not just his projects.
Said by: Rochelle (from MN) at June 9, 2006 07:24 PM
The reason why gays and lesbians make a larger percentage of sci-fi fans is because fiction and fantasy (in whatever form the take) are ways we can escape the world around us and live in some sort of utopia where we aren't persecuted or used as political bait (unlike the way President Bush is using gay marriage as a wedge issue.)
It's a belief that social and technological advances will provide us with a better life, even though it may sacrifice some of our own humanity in the process.
The sad truth is that change is never linear, and that technological advances seldom match social and political advances, and so we find oursevles in an unblanaced world where some people have the means to destroy it. Gene Roddenberry's vision resonated with so many people because it was a way for us to say "we made it" as a civilization. We didn't mess up this world. We are better collectively than in our indiviual woes and wars.
The good Star Trek episodes are about people solving challenges together. The bad ones were when they were acting like frat boys in outer space.
This is one of my all-time favorite podcasts and this episode is one of my all-time favorite interview shows. Fausto and Marc are a rare blessing in the gay world and George Takei is a hero to me because he came out in such a classy bold way.
It is never too late to come out of the gay and lesbian closet, for whatever reason. Thank you George Takei for taking a bold stance.
