FOF #409 - The Legacy of Iris Chacón - 10.17.06

Way before J-Lo, before Chita Rivera and Rita Moreno worked Broadway, before Selena, there was Iris Chacón, a latin diva who shook her booty on the stage and small screen of Puerto Rico. Her incredible proportions, her outrageous sexy dancing and latin heat made her the toast of Latin America, and in many ways set the stage for decades of hispanic drag queens all around the world.
Today John Q Sanchez and I look back on Hispanic Hertiage Month with a look at the fabulous and bootylicious Iris Chacón. Born of the decadent 1970's Iris made her fame as a showgirl in the casinos of Puerto Rico, which at the time was THE place to be on the weekend.
In Puerto Rico a lot of people including my father would LOVE to go to the Casinos, the dance halls on the weekends to dance and socialize. One of the fabulous entertainers of her time, Iris Chacón broke into mainstream success with her daytime risque cabaret show "El Show de Iris Chacón." She was so memorable to so many gay men and straight men alike!
When I started my own cable access show, the title "El Chow de Faustina" was a nod to this decadent lavish woman of Puerto Rican fame, who could never pronounce the word "SHOW."
If you're wanting to get a really fabulous present for your local drag queen, get the Carol Channing ventriolquist doll from JC Penney.
The only podcast with lots of "SAZON" and no MSG- the Feast of Fools.

Hey Fausto!!! I HAVE to give you major props for mentioning Sabado Gigante on the FOF! I loved this show when I didin't have cable and it was the only show that my favorite aunt and I could relate to so it brought back real special memories. OMG on the subject, have you seen Don Francisco lately? Can you say MAJOR plastic surgery?!?! He fucking looks like my grandpa did when he was 40, and even then that was old looking for him! Well, I love the show and I'm starting my very first job tomorrow so wish me luck, and as soon as i get my first pay check I'll buy a red and a blue FOF shirt! Love you all and all the fans here in San Diego REALLY MISS MISS. V-MAR!!!! Much LOVE - Omar S.

I almost wrecked the car laughing at Fausto's Carol Channing impression. Especially picturing that little doll walking around when everyone is asleep. When I was a little kid I got a Howdy Doody ventriliguist doll for Christmas. We probably looked like twins. We were almost the same size and both redheads.
One more day and my partner Glen, my sister Cathy, my nephew Grant, and Lilly (My sister's exchange student from Hong Kong) and I will be in Chicago. Can not wait!

Jau you have to remember that Iris Chacon for DECADES was a major staple of daytime Puerto Rican television. Her dancing around I would consider safe for work, unless your boss doesn't want you to watch showgirls and showmen dancing to showtunes!

I followed Jau's lead and nominated FOF for several categories as well. We'll keep the kudos coming to you!

Here's the Wikipedia article for Rudi Gernreich--I kept pronouncing his name wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudi_Gernreich
Nice chatting with you, Fausto

Love your show. I just ordered the red t-shirt

This is hilarious, because just yesterday I was checking the fluids in our car (NOT a euphemism for lesbian sex... I actually had my head under the hood -- also not a euphemism) -- and the engine coolant was low!
Time to get some tremendo coolant!

Hi fausto
With the t-shirts (blue & red) does the $40 inc the postage and if not how much is it to the UK?
Do you know if the medium in US sizes is similar to ours in the UK?

OMG, I can't believe you were talking about Skiddo!!! I love that movie. Well, okay, it really sucks. But it's so bad I love it. I mean, Carol Channing seducing Frankie Avalon? Jackie Gleason having an acid trip? It's one of the most surreal movies I've ever seen. And it's most notable for being the last movie Groucho Marx was ever in (the final scene of which is Groucho taking a puff off of a joint) and the late Harry Nillson singing the credits (every single one, down to the roman numerals in the date). Yes, if you can get ahold of this movie, it is a much see. Buzz with disagree with me. But I'm tellin' ya, it ain't good. It ain't even so bad it's good. It's just bad, but like driving past a car wreck you just have to look.
Love,

Hey pup don,
I saw Skidoo at MoMA last night--it was much better than I remembered it, and better than you make it out to be too. I guess you have to go into it with low expectations. Some people walked out, but the rest of the audience went nuts for it! Some of my friends are even going back when it plays again on Friday.

fausto - hehe... well, yeah, i don't think i'm even supposed to have been on youtube anyway... not that anyone has said anything about it!
but i checked her out at home on youtube and it was lots of fun. although it would be better fun if i could understand what she's saying!
Said by: Jau at October 17, 2006 09:46 PM
Gary,
If the postage thing is a hassle, just have them mail it to me and I will get it to you. Remember, I have access to a US post office. Not a problem. I ordered a red t-shirt the other day for myself and they could just throw it in the same package.

It was really sweet how you pronounced "99 Luftballons" by Nena, I really couldn't believe you two talking about the German version of this telenovela called "Verliebt in Berlin" (In Love In Berlin), which is really really awful *g*
BTW Galactica rocks!

John, I'm ordering a red tshirt as well, so if it's cool with you, can I have it sent to you as well? I assume it will save the FOF some cash not having to send it via regular post to UK, as the last time I bought a tshirt I didn't pay anything extra.

I can't believe you guys missed Rozie Perez as a famous Puerto Rican. Check out her documentary Yo Soy Boricua.
Said by: Curt at October 18, 2006 08:34 AM
Sarah,
Of course your t-shirt is more than welcome to mingle with mine. If it saves a few bucks/pounds...not a problem.

Iris Chacón was on the children's show Gullah Gullah Island. In one of the episodes she teaches everyone to Salsa. She is the only person to ever really teach me to dance.
I want a Carol Channing doll more than anything right now.
