FOF #503 - Myth Busters - 04.02.07

Bustin' makes me feel good! Today we're celebrating the Nine Year Anniversary of the Feast of Fools by going after some common and non-so-common myths and misconceptions about food, crime, sex and biology. You know the stuff we just love to talk about.
For example:
• Do the letters of the GAP clothing store mean "Gay And Proud?"
• Why did actor Dick York (the original Darrin Stevens on the TV show Bewitched) leave the show?
• Was Walt Disney frozen upon his death in order to wait for the day when medical technology makes his re-animation possible?
• Does eating celery result in negative calories?
• Can you tell about a loaf of bread by looking at the color of the plastic twist tag?
• Does micro-waving plastic release toxic chemicals?
• Is the Fiji Mermaid real?
• Are green potatoes poisonous?
• Does hair grow back thicker when you shave it?
• Will the police be summoned if you type your PIN number backwards?
• Did Lee Marvin and Captain Kangaroo fight together at the battle at Iwo Jima?
• Have any people ever had naturally occurring blue hair?
• Is the Feast of Fools the worlds most downloaded GLBT podcast?
• Is Grey's Anatomy a good TV show?
In case you didn't know the Feast of Fools began as a fund-raiser for the now-defunct Randolph Street Gallery. Although we couldn't save the gallery, the Feast of Fools went on and on, first as a drag show, then as a cabaret, later on as a rock and roll play, and now as an award-winning podcast.
The name comes from an essay that gay activist Harry Hay wrote about how people need to feel free to express themselves, no matter how foolish they might fear to come across. I just loved his idea, and I came up with the name "Banquet of Fools" to name the variety show, which was quickly renamed "Feast of Fools." Who doesn't like alliteration?
Join us as my mom does a surprise phone call and Amanda surprises us all with some bittersweet news.
The podcast that is like a baseball bat against ignorance and fear- Feast of Fools.

Amanda, you made me cry! I will miss hearing all your girl-geekery (which I totally relate to). Best of luck with your show, I hope there's a way I can listen in the UK.
And on another sad note, a true/false question: San Francisco is such an enlightened liberal city that they've done away with racism. Well, my college graduate husband, in SF on business for the BBC, tried to hail a cab for nearly an hour. He stopped counting at 40 cabs and had to walk. He happens to be black. Nothing like this has even happened to him in London. Makes us both very glad about where we live.

Oh my God... I saw that last line about Amanda making a bittersweet announcement and I force-downloaded the show so I could hear it... at 4 in the morning. And bittersweet it was-- You got me crying!!
I'm so glad that you're going on to bigger and better things... and that you'll still be around. (I was worried you were moving away or something!) But boy am I gonna miss you on the Feast of Fools. FoF will live on, but there's going to be some mighty big purple shoes to fill. :)
Thank you for the laughs, the wisdom and the friendship. I'm proud to say that I've known you for a long time -- longer than you've been on this show... so I know how exciting this opportunity must be for you. I can't wait to find out all about it and make sure I listen.
I'm proud of you. :) See you soon, love.

Farewell Amanda - what a sad show ending!
San Francisco has so few cabs you'd be lucky to catch one if you were Bill Gates & waving 100 dollar bills in the air. I'm sure the fact that your hubby is college educated had nothing to do with it.
Said by: joop at April 2, 2007 04:46 AM
I never expected to be reduced to tears at the end of a podcast. I'm going to miss you Amanda! When I was catching up on old shows, I always listened to the ones with you first (I'm horribly biased towards Jewish Princesses/Sci Fi Fans/Klingon Beauty Pagent Winners). You're the reason I'm now hooked on Doctor Who, and that I'm a little scared of the Darleks!!
Take Care, and all the best for the future,
Simon

Please tell me this is an April Fool's joke Amanda? I mean, great if you got a show, but we don't want you to leave!
Said by: Richard at April 2, 2007 07:51 AM
Amanda, thank you for your time spent on the show and always remember that you had a major impact on my life and have made me look at things differently which will make me a more positive person. Love always Amanda.

Amanda, I am so happy and excited for you. Congratulations! Of course we will all miss you terribly on FOF. Thank you for brightening our days, lifting our spirits, and keeping Fausto in check. I hope your new adventures are wonderful... although you'll have to email updates to FOF so we can at least know how you are!

Another jewel from the FOF family crown is taken?! Say it isn't so!
Amanda-
I will truly miss you and your wonderful quips and charm you have brought to the FOF!
I am truly blessed to have met you during your visit with us here in LA and I'll always remember my riding crop lesson to you at Mickey's and the fun of our Disneyland experience (even though you missed ASIMOV).
You and your purple hair will be missed (and you made me cry damnit!).
Peace, love, and nothing but good wishes to you and your future endevors! Please come visit us in LA again soon!

Amanda, we love you and we will surely miss your quirky voice and crazy antics, best of luck baby in your new endeavors, you will be sorely missed but I know your new show will be a great success! stay in touch, maybe you can be a "guest" on a future FOF show? lova ya!
Said by: Juantana in DC at April 2, 2007 09:26 AM
Hey, I'm highly suspicious that this is an April Fool's joke. You know why - Fausto and Marc are too chatty and happy at Amanda's news. If she were REALLY leaving you would hear the real sadness in their voices, and they're just too cheery about the news. But you know what - I think something new and exciting for Amanda might actually come from this joke! I hope I'm right!
Said by: Patricia Fernós at April 2, 2007 09:51 AM

You were the reason I wrote my first fan letter to FOF. I am going to miss you. Good luck and congratulations.

Don't let to doorknob hit you where the good lord split you.
Just kidding. Amanda we'll all miss you. Good luck with everything!
I wish all of you guys all the best. I never want to hear the podcasts stop. So do me a favor and help plug these guys to whatever media company has hired you. Marc, Fausto, Sal-E and Ronnie are WAY too talented to be passed up anywhere.
To be honest, I'm suprised nobody has come knocking the FOF's door. Is this an April Fool's joke? Or is something really big in store here?

Said by: Misstress Chapstinka at April 2, 2007 10:36 AM
dearest amanda,
oh, to go from my highest point to the lowest in 3 short hours... (this random guy i met for all of 5 minutes last week and given up as a lost cause turned up at my gym earlier this evening! and he's not even a member there, just visiting for the day! so we finally exchanged numbers... OH JOY!!! then... THIS!)
i'm still wiping away tears as i write this... i'm so, so genuinely happy for you but i gotta say, not so for us-- your devoted fans and listeners!!!
given the time difference between chicago and manila, i usually download the latest epsiode at night and reserve it for the next morning, to savor and enjoy while i'm at work. but the moment i read the show notes and the comments, i forced myself, with the heaviest of hearts, to listen to this one RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW! and in a wierd way i'm kinda glad i did... at least i got to cry and wail and bawl in the privacy of my own bedroom, instead of in front of my colleagues at work! :'(
what can i say that hasn't been said already? i just wish i'd had the chance to meet you in person... unlike fausto and marc who live down the block from you, i live half a world away so accidentally bumping into you is SOO out of the question... so essentially, an ASS-less FOF is an ASS-less ME...
thank you for the hours and hours of fun, wit and intelligence you've shared with us over the years, i will cherish those episodes forever! know that you are loved, appreciated and will be missed...
sorry for rambling...
all the best, all the success and all my love,
patrick

I was sitting there at work when I heard the news...and all I could do is stop everything and sit there with my mouth hanging open in shock. Amanda, you were one of my very favorite members of the FOF. I always looked forward to when you'd grace the show with your sharp wit, your warm personality, and your sweet sense of humor. I'll never forget y--waiiiiiit a minute. Wasn't this show recorded April 1st??!!!!!

Amanda, we will miss you sooo much. No matter what anyone says, you never where "and the rest". You added so much to the show and I am sure your talents will prove to make an amazing radio show. I must admit, I started to tear up too when I listened to the podcast and you said you where not going to be around anymore. Hopefully those dumbass radio guys will realize that that the FoF is a good promo for thier show and will let you come back in the near future. We love you and we will miss you!

btw ... it really sucks that you're going to have to nix public involvement w/ FoF.
We will miss your sorely!

Said by: Pat at April 2, 2007 04:57 PM
Wow, I thought for sure it was true and then reading all your previous messages has me wondering.... I'm a real gullible fool when it comes to believing stuff! Anyway, I read or heard somewhere that the best day to break bad news is on Fridays cause then people forget or get over it or at least have less energy to deal with it by the time Monday comes around.... Mondays is the worst day to announce big things.
Anyway, if it is true, it is sad! Amanda is an amazing part of your show. She's one of my favorites among a lot of favorites. I will miss her funny, smart comments.
ps. My birthday is on April 10, the same day as someone else on the show but now I can't remember who! But six days before Fausto's...

Amanda,
First of all, congratulations on the new radio show! As has been stated on here before, appearing on this show tends to help one establish or re-establish a standing in the entertainment business, and you are further proof of this fact. (Take THAT, Jai Rodriguez!)
I will miss your intellect, your humor, and your ability to keep Fausto and Marc on their toes. I know that you will be able to carry these gifts with you to your new radio show, and you might be the one thing that gets me to come back to terrestrial radio.
Best wishes as you move forward into the next phase of your career.
Of course, if this is, in fact, an April Fool's joke, then it is certainly a creative one, and you deserve the kudos for playing it up so well.
Great show, everybody!

Oh, Amanda.
It was not the way I wanted to start of Pesach by hearing that you are leaving.
Thank you for the past year + that I have listened. You have truly made this nice Jewish boy laugh.

This is all about Amanda! You are my favorite. Your voice reminds me of Fran Dresher. I love her too. I guess I am just trying to say I will miss you and my heart goes out to you and your new job. Good Luck and have a GREAT time. I will try to listen to your show. ~Ben
Said by: Ben at April 3, 2007 12:02 AM
I don't know why everyone is getting so worked up. Remember when Miss Ronnie said she was going to leave the feast of fools forever? She came crawling back. Sal-E said he was taking a "Break" and he is back. V-Mar said she was leaving forever and just last week she was on the phone chatting it up. Amanda will be back. When the radio station realizes house popular Amanda is because of the FoF they are going to beg her to go back on and hopefully pay for advertising. So Amanda, I ain't goin' to say Good Bye. I am going to say see you around, can't wait to hear from you again.
Said by: Jonathan at April 3, 2007 12:28 AM
Oh, I also wanted to comment about the negative calories thing. Fausto was right water does take up energy. It takes 4.184 J to raise one gram of water one degree. You can not use the water you drink until it is body temperature (cold water would slow your metabolic processes.) So when you drink water you expend energy to change the temerpature, they colder the water the more energy it takes to raise the heat. I think I hear somewhere that if you only drank ice water for a year you would burn an extra 3 lb!
Said by: Jonathan at April 3, 2007 12:38 AM
Hey guys,
Thanks for another fun-filled show. We really enjoyed this one. You're such founts of knowledge.
Amanda, we could see you in a Scientific lab coat, purple hair blowing in the wind whilst you share your findings.
Then the ATOM BOMB at the end which we have now seen was a big April Fool's joke. Well, we're happy that you're still with us as we would have missed you tremendously.
Thanks for brightening up our day so brilliantly!!!
