“Sissy Boy Slap Party”

By John Q. Sanchez on May 22, 2007

Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin’s new “A Brand Upon the Brain” is a silent feature, but it’s being screened in the capitals of the world with a live 16-piece orchestra, three-person sound-effects crew, and a rotating cast of special guest-star narrators. Here in New York, these included Isabella Rosellini and Justin Bond; San Francisco had Twin Peaks’s glamorous Joan Chen; kooky Crispin Glover held down the entire Chicago run.

“Sissy Boy Slap Party,” a 2004 short by Maddin, is spooky, fetishy, and campy—look out, Kenneth Anger! With its screechy score and percussive slaps ‘n’ claps, it’s no silent movie, that’s for sure. —John Q. Sanchez

Britain’s darling Pipettes (Becki, Gwenno, and Rosay) are touring the U.S., and everyone’s going nuts for “Pull Shapes”—the catchy song and the colorful video, which is a close copy of a scene from the beloved 1970 cinematic masterpiece “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.”

Remember this nut? He made an unscheduled guest appearance during Bob Dylan’s 1998 Grammy performance, with the cryptic phrase “Soy Bomb” inked on his lean, nude torso. No one stopped him for about a minute because they couldn’t tell if he was part of the act or not—with Bob Dylan, anything is possible. Michael Portnoy […]

John Waters made a movie called “Eat Your Makeup” and even shot outrageous scenes of people injecting themselves with cosmetics. Now, the people at Blendtec make their bid for viral-marketing superiority by putting a Walgreens worth of Cover Girl in their excessive “Total Blender.” I’ve seen a few looks over the years that may have […]

Lots of documentary reports on queens have interviews in the makeup chair […]

Above is Finland’s Lordi, the monster-rock winners of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest. They’ll open the big show tomorrow, but who will prevail this year at the glamorous competition? Will it be D’Nash, representing Spain? Germany’s Roger Cicero with Frauen Regieren Die Welt (which means “Women Rule the World”)? What about Ireland’s Dervish, performing […]

Breezy impersonator Barbra by Halstead calls Hollywood’s fabled Comedy Store looking for her big break in the industry. As usual, her unwitting skit partner doesn’t know he’s purportedly speaking to Barbra, which makes it all the more funny (funny weird and funny ha-ha). Check out fake Babs’s quick wit dealing with the gals at the […]

The favorite video of Anne “Celestia” Heche?
The world’s going to hell—but maybe if we all wish really hard at the same time for an alien invasion, it’ll be ok! That’s the message of this uncharacteristically broad-minded toe-tapper from the Carpenters. Written and originally recorded by a Canadian band called Klaatu, “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” […]
