Dax Flame: Peer Pressure

By John Q. Sanchez on May 7, 2007

Here is episode #3 of Dax Flame’s voluminous and controversial YouTube diary, which documents the 15-year-old’s heart-rending, mind-bending attempt to make friends with a classmate, Jacob, who really, really excites him (see here if you don’t believe me). Dax’s unusual intensity has led some to speculate he’s autistic. Others are convinced it’s all a lonelygirl15-type fiction—particularly this impassioned guy, who certainly seems to have done his homework. Says listener Victor, who kindly brought this phenomenon to our attention, “I want to believe it’s real.” Well, it’s real in the sense that it exists, and whether he’s sincere or not-so, Dax is a unique boy with a story of wanting to belong that anyone could relate to. Right? What do you make of it all? —JQS

A little something extra after the jump: Jacob comes to Dax’s to study while the camera rolls.

Self-described “Broadway nerd” Ashley digs into the very same “Applause” soundtrack that brought us the enthralling overkill of “But Alive” and lends her youthful flesh to Lauren Bacall’s ragged wheeze. The results are stunning! —John Q. Sanchez
Extra! Extra! Hey, look at the headlines!: Ashley talks a little bit about herself and where she’s coming from.

From the hit Brit-com “The Vicar of Dibley” (to be remade for US TV later this as “The Minister of Divine,” starring Kirstie Alley). “It Should Have Been Me,” recorded over the years by a raftload of divas including Gladys Knight, Yvonne Fair, and Adeva, has inevitably become a lip-synch classic. Lady Bunny’s rendition was […]

Mrs. Bogart croaks her way through this forceful number from “Applause,” the 1970 musical adaptation of “All About Eve.” In this scene, stage legend Margo Channing (Bacall) follows her assistant down to Greenwich Village, with schemeing Eve Harrington in tow. Their destination’s a frugtastic all-male watering hole where the decorative use of enormous neon alphabet […]

  • Petula Clark, “A Sign of the Times”

It turns out that 60s chanteuse Petula Clark, whose mega-hit, “Downtown,” is assuredly playing on an oldies station somewhere right this minute, has at least one other song to her credit. (In fact, according to Wikipedia, “she is the most successful British female solo recording artist to date.” Wow! Take that Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, […]

Nothing says “Brazil” like winter sports, so Canadian bronze-medal Olympic skater Toller Cranston adds some ruffle sleeves to his black tights and lets loose on “I Go to Rio.” He also demonstrates a simple, ingenious technique for successful lip-synching: Keep that camera (or audience) as far away from your face as possible!

This one mostly speaks for itself. I especially like the big sunglasses and bigger attitude of the dude on the right, and that the guy behind them playing video games doesn’t seem to realize the spectacle happening only a few feet away. —John Q. Sanchez

  • Amanda Lear, Follow Me
    1 response - Posted 04.24.07

In this sin-sational song, from the concept album “Sweet Revenge,” the gorgeous, fascinating, and slightly ridiculous Amanda Lear wants to entice you into a life of soulless glamour. “Follow Me” is just the beginning of “Sweet Revenge,” which tells the story of a woman who sold her soul—to Satan!—for fame and fortune. Autobiographical? Maybe! Or […]
