Petula Clark, “A Sign of the Times”

By John Q. Sanchez on April 27, 2007

It turns out that 60s chanteuse Petula Clark, whose mega-hit, “Downtown,” is assuredly playing on an oldies station somewhere right this minute, has at least one other song to her credit. (In fact, according to Wikipedia, “she is the most successful British female solo recording artist to date.” Wow! Take that Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Lulu, et. al.)

“A Sign of the Times” isn’t the same song as Prince’s, or the Belle Starrs’, and though it’s pleasant and peppy, an hour from now you won’t recall how it goes. But you’ll probably still remember this mod production number starring Petula and her backup prancers. Watch out for Miss Thing on the right hand of the screen, who gets so into it he loses his hat and then almost falls out of his one-legged flamingo pose. This clip is dedicated to FoF’s New Mexico listeners—Petula’s wearing your state flag. —John Q. Sanchez

Bonus beats: Petula performs her signature song on “Top of the Pops,” with another energetic ensemble.

  • Amanda Lear, Follow Me

By John Q. Sanchez on April 24, 2007

In this sin-sational song, from the concept album “Sweet Revenge,” the gorgeous, fascinating, and slightly ridiculous Amanda Lear wants to entice you into a life of soulless glamour. “Follow Me” is just the beginning of “Sweet Revenge,” which tells the story of a woman who sold her soul—to Satan!—for fame and fortune. Autobiographical? Maybe! Or […]

Liza gamely jumps into the role of Lola, the ill-starred love-struck showstopper at the Copacabana, when they used to have a show. Why did we ever trade variety shows for reality shows? Happy Friday—and do […]

Feeling like a “plain Jane”? Need a glamour boost? Well, grab a roller and start painting! These before-and-afters of Eva Longoria and Jennifer Lopez prove that movie-star beauty isn’t something you’re born with–it’s bought and sold in one-gallon cans.

Puppets are just drag you wear on your hand, and the Muppet Show was one of the nuttiest, most sophisticated shows on television in the 70s, despite (or because of?) its children’s-TV roots. Here Debbie Harry of Blondie appears to have the time of her life, confronted by Jim Henson’s psychedelic creations at every turn […]
