Get this party started, honey

By Fausto Fernós on July 12, 2007

Shirley Bassey, better known as the campy voice behind such hits as the “Theme from Goldfinger” and “History Repeating” has recently put out her own 70-year-old spin on Pink’s hit song “Get This Party Started.”

It’s hard to imagine the diva is 70. One would think Shirley’s idea of a party would be shuffleboard, pinching your cheeks and serving fruitcake— it looks like Shirley’s all about martinis, glamour and getting her ass kissed!

  • Blendtec Blenders’s “Will it Blend?”: Makeup Smoothie

John Waters made a movie called “Eat Your Makeup” and even shot outrageous scenes of people injecting themselves with cosmetics. Now, the people at Blendtec make their bid for viral-marketing superiority by putting a Walgreens worth of Cover Girl in their excessive “Total Blender.” I’ve seen a few looks over the years that may have […]

The favorite video of Anne “Celestia” Heche?
The world’s going to hell—but maybe if we all wish really hard at the same time for an alien invasion, it’ll be ok! That’s the message of this uncharacteristically broad-minded toe-tapper from the Carpenters. Written and originally recorded by a Canadian band called Klaatu, “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” […]

Here is episode #3 of Dax Flame’s voluminous and controversial YouTube diary, which documents the 15-year-old’s heart-rending, mind-bending attempt to make friends with a classmate, Jacob, who really, really excites him (see here if you don’t believe me). Dax’s unusual intensity has led some to speculate he’s autistic. Others are convinced it’s all a lonelygirl15-type […]

Mrs. Bogart croaks her way through this forceful number from “Applause,” the 1970 musical adaptation of “All About Eve.” In this scene, stage legend Margo Channing (Bacall) follows her assistant down to Greenwich Village, with schemeing Eve Harrington in tow. Their destination’s a frugtastic all-male watering hole where the decorative use of enormous neon alphabet […]

It turns out that 60s chanteuse Petula Clark, whose mega-hit, “Downtown,” is assuredly playing on an oldies station somewhere right this minute, has at least one other song to her credit. (In fact, according to Wikipedia, “she is the most successful British female solo recording artist to date.” Wow! Take that Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, […]

  • Amanda Lear, Follow Me

In this sin-sational song, from the concept album “Sweet Revenge,” the gorgeous, fascinating, and slightly ridiculous Amanda Lear wants to entice you into a life of soulless glamour. “Follow Me” is just the beginning of “Sweet Revenge,” which tells the story of a woman who sold her soul—to Satan!—for fame and fortune. Autobiographical? Maybe! Or […]

Remember Sparty, who lip-synched the house down with his full-bore non-drag performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”? He’s back with a new video featuring the same song, a new look, masterful use of canned applause, and even a guest appearance from Brandy (that girl from “Moesha”). —John Q. Sanchez

Here’s the official trailer to the upcoming movie of the musical of the John Waters movie “Hairspray.” This new movie really has the look of the old one—the costumes, sets, and hair are all right out of the 1987 version of 1963. The play re-interpreted the original movie’s mix of wild styles and drab settings […]

Who could ask for more? A: You, after you saw Debbie Harry on the Muppet Show. So here it is! Liza gamely jumps into the role of Lola, the ill-starred love-struck showstopper at the Copacabana, when they used to have a show. Why did we ever trade variety shows for reality shows? Happy Friday—and do […]
