Comedian Elvira Kurt talks about being a lesbian dad on the Feast of Fools podcast! The podcast that calls and calls until it gets it right-Feast of Fools!

Getting a hold of celebrities is difficult, especially when you call the wrong number. It’s very nice when the person on the other end of the line is polite though. Leave it to the Canadians to be like that. They’re just happy to get a phone call, even if it’s a wrong one.

When we finally get out and proud comedian Elvira Kurt on the phone, we are surprised that she has become a lesbian dad to a real live human baby. We never find out the name of the baby but we are glad that Elvira gets to experience the joy of parenthood since so much of her act is based on her growing up. That’s the best thing about parenting, you get to put your kid through all the things your parents put you through.

Elvira channels the spirit of her mother, Irene, a bleak Hungarian immigrant in her act. Elvira practically becomes Irene and Irene has a think accent and always sees the dark side of things. For Irene, life is hard, bleak and everything you love will break you heart and disappoint you. Elvira claims that the Eastern European stereotype of despair and gloom is based on her mother.

We chat with Ms Kurt about Girls School, an all-girl comedy movement. It seems that girls in girls schools perform better than girls in co-ed schools so they figure that girls on an all girl comedy tour would perform better without men. Its sort of an comedy version of the Michigan Womyn’s Festival.

Our lovely Gem Sweater Diva and a FoF favorite guest Leslie Hall performed in the review. She even stayed at Elvira’s house. Did you know Leslie has a tail? She doesn’t really but Elvira says that she leads a “marsupial” lifestyle. We think she means “nocturnal,” but you never know, so don’t be surprised if you see Leslie hanging from a tree someday.

Elvira is a widely successful Canadian comedian both north and south of the border. She’s made many TV appearances and even hosted her own talk show in Canada. You can find out more about Elvira at her website.

A big thanks to Nick for tirelessly working to bring celebrities like Elvira Kurt on the show!

Great show. I love all your interviews but this is one of the best . I have always been told that I should do stand-up but I have never had the balls to get on stage, So I enjoyed hearing about where her material and inspiration come from.

Elvira, I have suggestions for you with your baby - talk to her!! Tell the baby jokes, be very expressive when you do and you will be amazed how wonderfully the baby tries to imitate you with her mouth! Jiggle the baby, move around with the baby, and you will soon be surprised when that BIG, REAL SMILE starts greeting you constantly! Dads are super important, I guess you know!

Besides supporting the mom, interaction with the baby is one of your more important jobs. Also, the Eastern European negativity is found in every culture, and that’s what people identify with. I’ve just come back from Puerto Rico where my daughter’s ex- mother-in-law is so beautiful BUT so negative that you take turns aching for her and disliking her. Great show, Fausto and Marc!

Elvira I just love how you admit that your little baby is the best and worst thing to happen tou you, I know a lot of people who would have you shot- they can all kiss your ass babe.

as always Mark and Fausto you rock.

woopwoopzzzigrawnibabbop! [Lady Bunny rewind sound] Did she say Leslie Hall and “her partner”??? Has Leslie Hall been outed as a bedazzling lezbeen on the FOF? If not, then I’m starting a fabulous rumor! Either way, {{jazz hands}} to you Leslie, the Keeper of Thy Gems. You are an inspiration to us all, girl.

The interview with Elvira was lovely. Canadians are just so likeable. Toronto is a wonderful city; Kate and I stayed there for a short hornymoon after getting hitched at City Hall last summer, and we just loved it. We met a lot of friendly folk; they were super welcoming and congratulatory. TO has a bunch of Chinatowns, and some really vibrant artsy neighborhoods. Good luck with the parenting, Elvira! I’m sure it will provide lots of comedic material, especially once your baby starts actually doing things. ;)

I loved the wrong number segment. Would you guys ever think of adding that (intentionally!) as part of the show? Kind of “Town of the Week” style, where you call up a random person and ask them questions about what life is like in their neck of the woods?

Haven’t watched the show yet but… Fausto, I just wanted to tell you that the “mini bites” aren’t a completely new podcast :P They’re just sound clips lol

lovely to hear her agian…shes one of my fav. female comedians I first knoe of when I got the comedy bug as a teen. thanks for the interview.

Bring her to London - she’s fantastic!

I love Elvira Kurt — I want to meet her mother!

Thank you for introducing me to Elvira Kurt!
