Gay pride season goes into full swing this year as thousands of leather men and women, sexual fetishists and their fans gathered at the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago to celebrate, meet and compete for the title of International Mr. Leather 2007, or I.M.L.
The annual I.M.L. Conference is the place in the Midwest to go every year to get your freak on and check out just about every sexual fetish imaginable, especially those that appeal to gay men. Originally started as a bar contest by Chuck Renslow in the 1970s, it has grown to be one of the largest events of it’s kind, with several other “feeder contests” happening as well, including the Mr. Bootblack and Pecs and Personality Physique Competition. But IML is more than just contests, it’s a happening! In fact most people who attend don’t even go to the contest. They party, play and explore the scene that is happening.
Human animals were very big this year at IML. We caught plenty of human dogs, pups, kittens, bunnies, otters, and of course bears and pigs in our steel jaw leg-hold traps. Now, don’t get on us about the traps, it’s IML after all and they did enjoy gnawing their limbs off to escape us. It’s what they call “play.” But really, why are people getting into being animals in a big way?
My guess is that people are trying to find joyful ways to express themselves sexually in order to get out of themselves and literally not just become another person, but a whole different being. On the other hand, it just looks like an awful lot of work just to get off. Just when does the “play” turn into sex?
We heard the word “play” being tossed around a lot- “pup-play” “tit-torture-play” and “kink-play” just to describe people finding new and unusual ways to turn each other on.
Although one man’s torture is another man’s pleasure, we’re not so sure about the concept. I don’t think anyone would go as far as to want to participate in “tax audit play,” “quadruple-bypass play” or “renewing your drivers license play.” Flip that indeed!

May 29, 2007 at 16:50I’m currently listening to the show, and haven’t gone through it all the way yet. (Although I will, don’t worry about it. ^_^)
I just have one quick comment to make, because I’ll probably forget it if I don’t.
With regards to Snickers the bunny, I just wanted to clear the air about furry and sexuality. Although there are a number of furs who will enter furry into their sex-play, furry doesn’t automatically mean something sexual: it generally represents something different to each member of the furry fandom. The main aspect that most, if not all, furries tend to share is that they will have an anthropomorphic animal as a persona (often times referred to as a “fursona”) which they wil use to represent themselves in art, or in online role-play (although not necessarily sexual role-play). I have considered myself to be a member of the furry fandom for about 9 years now, and I have never seen it as a sexual fetish, at least not for me. Yes, there’s a lot of furry pornographic pictures on the internet, but I would much rather have sex with someone naked, than with them in a fursuit (that’s the costume of them dressed up as an animal).
The reason that it’s referred to as a fandom, is simply because it’s a group of people who are generally just people who were fans of saturday morning cartoons, or TV shows like “Animorphs”, and never really got out of it. There are entire conventions dedicated entirely to the furry fandom, and if you want to check them out, I can get you a couple of links to the websites.
Also, if anyone wants to get in touch with me because they have questions, or just want me to expand on something that I’ve mentioned, here’s my email address:
