IF you could distill this podcast into one word, what would that word be?
The White Stripes did a publicity stunt where they played a “single note” concert in the city of St. John’s. After playing the note (reported to be a C#) they announced that they had “now officially played in every province and territory in Canada.”
That’s an easy paycheck, don’t you think? Nice work if you can get it.
Germany and Austria this past week launched two television cable channels we wish were offered here in the U.S.- for Austria, the Sound of Music channel that plays the beloved Rogers & Hammerstein movie musical all day, all night! You got it, over and over again.
For the German goth in you, there is also the Death Channel, whose programming features talk shows, documentaries and features regarding death, dying and grieving.
We have to settle for Logo, the Angel Network and Oxygen. Yuck!
Last week the world’s tallest man was set up on a “blind date” with the world’s smallest man, both who happen to be Asian. Try pronouncing these names: Bao Xishun (the world’s tallest man) and He Pingping (the world’s smallest man) for some reason were put together for this photo. We think they make a cute couple!
What you might not know is that Bao was in the news earlier last year in December for saving the lives of two dolphins. How did he do it? Don’t ask. Okay, if you’re really curious, he used his unnaturally long arms to reach into their stomachs and pull out some pieces of plastic they accidentally swallowed.
Marc wants to know why they didn’t ask Pingping to crawl down inside.
Also this week, CNN puts out a poorly worded headline generalizing all Chinese food as being made from cardboard, even though later in the story they say one guy did it, but that the practice is commonplace. Also did you know rats are back on the menu in Southern China? It seems there is a epidemic of rats, tasty delicious mouth watering rats.
We’re not sure why so many deliciously odd news come from China, but it does. It must have something to do with the 1.6 billion people living there, making up almost 20% of the world’s population. Or that the government squashes most political news, so they have to turn elsewhere for their coverage which probably has more to do with the strange and unusual than other parts of the world.
Either way, we love these news stories.
Join Marc and me, Fausto Fernós as we talk about the Harry Potter “final book” scandal. An online retailer accidentally shipped the books four days early, prompting mass hysteria and lawsuits. Never fear though, J.K. Rowling hints on her website that she will probably write more Harry Potter books after all.
If she really wants to put the Potter series to rest, just put out a series of “Prequel” books and films like they did with the Star Trek franchise or Star Wars. Revisionist fiction does a great deal to cool down the fires of fandom. Don’t even get me started about Wicked.

July 19, 2007 at 08:09The Von Trapp family is still very involved in performing. The von Trapp Children–actually the great-grandchildren of Captain von Trapp–perform all over the world, and have three CDs produced. Could be interesting to have them record an intro to the movie some time.
