Owen Keehnen loves porn stars a lot. He wrote this tell-all book about porn stars called "Starz"Why do people decide to become porn stars? Although being a “porn star” may carry a certain mystique. you don’t usually make a lot of money at it. Being in entertainment generally takes a big toll on your psyche and your finances. Your really better off selling real estate if your in it for the money.

Porn stars also have to contend with the social stigma of their trade, sexually transmitted diseases and the reality that quite a few porn producers can be very shady.

Being a porn star just isn’t the same today as it was in the past. A lot of people are posting cheeky pics of themselves online and with sites like x-tube, anyone with a video camera and a virtual tip jar can become a porn star. It’s just that easy.

So why then become a “porn star” when you can just do it online anonymously? Why do it with a production company?

Today we return to our regularly scheduled programming as we talk to writer Owen Keehnen about his new book “More Starz” an update to his collection of interviews with gay male porn stars.

Listen as Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernos talk to Owen about how the allure of being a porn star is changing, how homemade online media is changing the porn industry and sure fire ways you can piss off a porn director and “never work in this town again.”

Owen shares with us some great stories of when he interviewed past gay celebrities like Camille Paglia and Quentin Crisp.

Mmm- the Feast of Fools.

SWEET!!! FIRST POST!

I’m one of those guys that wanted/wants to be a porn star. For me, it’s an exhibitionist thing… I’m very proud of my body and I really like having sex… it’s kind of a win win for me.

I haven’t listened to the show yet, but when I do I may add some more comments … I just couldn’t resist first post!

Send your pics to us and we’ll see if oyu have the goods.

So why be a “porn star” with a production company when you can just do it on your own?

I love how edgy Marc and Fausto where throughout the show! But I know it’s all LOVE!

very interesting show, im gonna give u a rating like they do and porns and this show deserves 4 COCKS!

I want to see the video of that HOT guy who sat on the cake in SF with his bare ass.. now that one was HOT! When will that be posted!!

I’m looking at the footage now. I don’t think we’ll post it though. Some things you just have to experience live. Plus, it contains partial nudity.

Brain-fork, you definitely have the looks for it. I don’t know what your body looks like but if you keep yourself in shape, have a decent sized schlong then you’re a shoe in. Just be careful who you get involved with. There are some really amazing people in the adult entertainment community but also so really scary ones. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and shop around before signing to any one studio. And talk to the other models about their experiences. That’s a good way to get a handle on who you’d want to work with.

Partial nudity schmudity! I still want a piece of that cake!

I love sexy 1970’s porn stars like Leo Ford and Al Parker. YUMMY!

I have read that book, It is, how do I put this? Interesting.
Great Coffee table book…

I found one of the first main stream gay pornos-Boys in the Sand

From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boys_in_the_Sand

Boys in the Sand is a landmark 1971 gay pornographic film. The film, directed by Wakefield Poole and starring Casey Donovan, was the first gay porn film to achieve mainstream crossover success and one of the earliest such films of any stripe to gain mainstream credibility, preceding Deep Throat by nearly a year. The title is drawn from that of the Mart Crowley play and film The Boys in the Band but the two are otherwise unrelated.

Anybody have a copy they’s like to lend us?

Owen, love to you with a sense of delicious honesty. I agree - cocaine sucks for the dollar - others should learn from the elders and use your money for more wiser fancies! If you had an audio book, I’d be sold! Consider enriching me so that I can enrich you.

All the best! Excellent straight-to-the-point podcast.

I want to see more Yoko inspired gay porn… primal sploshing

I have to say I was more than a little bit shocked by Fausto’s comment that being HIV positive would make someone sexually undesirable. While I appreciate his candor about his own feelings I feel like this attempt to “deglamorize” bareback porn by driving home some notion that HIV positive people are sexual pariahs is grotesque and offensive. If you believe that safe sex works why be so concerned about the status of others? Shouldn’t all sexual partners be treated as though they are HIV positive so that you DO take the necessary precautions?

I also find the constant analogy about smoking in film and barebacking to be a very lame analogy. Smoking is not an inherent human need like sex. Barebacking will always have an allure because it is a more spontaneous and natural than interrupting sex to slip on a condom. Everyone has a responsibility to protect themselves, but the porn industry doesn’t have a responsibility to create a moral sexual standard for us as gay men. I think we’re smart enough to process the enormous amount of information out there about how to protect yourself and to make informed decisions.

They did point out correctly that straight porn is not held to the same standard. Condoms are extremely rare in straight porn. There is no stigma professionally or culturally attached in the Adult film industry to straight porn without condoms. All straight porn is essentially bareback porn.

Thanks for the excellent interview guys.. the shows that feature porn talk are my favorites… and bareback 70s/80s porn is the best!!!

He’s a cool guy. I wanted to be Pope, too!

Having sex with someone you KNOW beforehand is HIV+ is still scary to someone who is Neg. Even though it doesn’t make sense: if someone is taking meds as they should, the viral load should be very low, so you could even be more sure that they won’t give you HIV than some stranger who’s status you don’t know. And, yes: when sleeping around, the safest assumption is that EVERYONE - except maybe you - is Poz. But the feeling isn’t rational, mostly instinctual: if you you choose between two people one of whom MIGHT have a cold and one of whom you are SURE has a cold, people tend to go ‘with the odds’ as they see them. Irrational, like I said, but I would probably have a hard time sleeping with someone I KNOW is Poz too. Even though I probably already did sleep with someone Poz at some point and - afterwards - am not particulary nervous about that. But I do feel a bit conflicted about my own Pozphobia.

You know I was just thinking about what we’ve heard in the last couple months on FoF. Let’s review. A gay activist from Uganda and one from Russia, a man who wrote the book on Gay Sex in the Muslim World (where else would you find THAT!?!), news about our favorite anti-gay senators, music from a group called the wet spots, an interview with a man who interviews and writes about pornstars, a F-M porn star with guns that would make most of us envious and a vagina, gay culture, gay history, how to make sangrias, a woman who was a victim a vandalism and now drives that vandalism all around the country recording peoples reactions, Fantasy performers, the man who basically invented the drag bar, a man named Jojo Baby who found a skull boiling in a pot on someones stove, 2 Chicago Mr. Gays, a gay puppeteer who predicts trends, all this and Marc, Fausto, Ronnie, Amanda, Sal-E and the gang. Where else can you find this stuff? It’s funny, interesting, and educational all mixed up in one package.

I only have 2 complaints, cake sitting can cause yeast infections (since when sugar breaks down or ferments it creates yeast) and I’m running out of music to buy on iTunes.

Oh btw get me Owens #, he’s damn cute!

Ok, so I did listen… i don’t really have comments on the show, it was fun I enjoyed listening (as I always do). However, I’ve been asked some things in the forum.

I’m working on getting you guys (Marc and Fausto) some pictures of myself. Firstly because I still owe a picture of me in my FoF shirt. The problem is, and this is my answer to you Fausto, I would rather photos of me be decent quality and I don’t have the time to set up my tripod or self timer to get decent photos taken.

As far as my appearance (this is addressed to PupDon), I’m really thin. I definitely fit the role of twink but it borders on sickly. I’ve had some contact with boyfun.com about being a model … but the problem is that they’re in Chicago and I’m in Windsor, Ontario. Unfortunately, I don’t have the means or funds to arrange to get to the people that would want to use me in porn so I have to rely on them coming here (or to Detroit) which has been rare.

Also (still to Pup) as I mentioned, I’m thin… and the popular form of porn requires me to be a built college guy. As a result, my options are rather limited.

Phoenix: When you break it all down like that, it really does make one realize how amazing this show is! Oh, by the way, sugar doesn’t create yeast (yeast is a fungus), it feeds yeast. :-D
