Is Clay Aiken gay? Does it matter? We get this question all the time. Being the top rated gay podcast in the world makes people think you are privy to personal information on celebrities and sometimes we are.
When we first heard the juicy details of pop musician Clay Aiken and real estate agent and former Green Beret John Paulus, we were in gossip heaven. The story was full of hilarious details and unusual sexual positions involving “Quarter Turns” as well as the fact that Paulus claimed to keep Clay’s semen as DNA evidence of the alleged triste.
Then after about a year and a half, one porn video later and many appearances by both Aiken and Paulus on talk shows and a sarcastic recantation by Paulus we are still left to wonder: what was the big fuss all about and why would John Paulus continue to talk about the story to this day and is Clay Aiken gay or not?
John Paulus wrote to us recently to affirm his allegations of a sexual encounter with Aiken and also because an ultra conservative church in Kansas issued a memo detailing why Clay should be allowed to perform there after some people objected to his potential appearance.
One reason they cited in Clay’s defense was:
“Rumors persist that his mannerisms and ’soft’ nature display a homosexual preference. But if appearance and voice alone determine sexual orientation, then Fred Rogers, (Mister Rogers) a conservative ordained Presbyterian minister must have been one as well. By the way, his 51 year marriage ended upon his death in 2003.”
You really can’t make this stuff up. So John is upset that Clay would even perform at a venue that does not embrace him and thwarts gay rights.
Even though Clay Aiken might not be gay (which we doubt) he is seen a “sissy” or as a gay man by many people, including Rosie O’Donnell and that Kansas church. Even the whole controversy with Aiken’s appearance on “Live with Regis and Kelly” was really about the conflict a heterosexual mom and a perceived gay man had over handling conflict on the show.
Rosie was right. If Clay had been a butch guy, Kelly Ripa wouldn’t have responded in the way she did. Kelly was right to tell him not to touch her mouth but the manner she did in suggested she was a bit weary of having his hands all over her face after she may have heard the gossip that Clay is a “fisting top.”
Really though, I think the story here is bigger than these two men. This really is about the political struggle for the southern church’s embrace of it’s own gay members.
On today’s show we’re talking to real estate agent and former marine John Paulus about his alleged affair with American Idol runner up and pop star Clay Aiken.
Paulus joins us to clear up any rumors about the affair and to stand by his story that it did indeed happen and why he’s deleted his blog and wikipedia entry. John also answers allegations from a blogger that thinks he is a big fat liar.
Listen as we talk to John Paulus about- Liberace and the legacy of closeted celebrities with a conservative fan base, Sen. Larry Craig and the political struggle for the southern church’s embrace of it’s own gay members.
