On today’s show we’re talking to Devin DeSantis and Brian Crum two of the cast members of Altar Boyz, a musical revue that parodies Christian boy bands with catchy songs and delicious puns.
The show walks the delicate fence of trying to appeal to an audience of gay men and blue haired women by poking gentle fun at the genre of Christian boy bands and yet at the same time jam packs a ton of puns and double entendres with a catchy musical theme.
It is a great show to bring your mom or dad to, but one thing I kept wanting to see is the romantic subtext of the two leads to actually flourish and develop.
Listen as we talk with Brian and Devin about the common ground between gays and Christians, how they came to to be in the show, how people’s opinions affect the way you look at yourself and coming out as a Christian and as a Catholic
We also chat about Kathy Griffin’s Emmy’s speech controversy, Dumbledore’s Army and Bozo’s dressing room.
Listen for details on how you can win a pair of tickets to see them live at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theater!

October 24, 2007 at 09:13I definitely want to see this show now. I was hugely involved in the scary christian scene that was convinced that they had to have their own version of eveything, including music, and that all “non-christian” versions were inherently evil… “if it is not of God, it must then be of Satan..”
Anyway, I think it’s a bit of a cop-out to say that “it’s up to the audience” to interpret. Yes, there is a bit of interpretation when it comes to art, but the creator/artist have something in particular in mind. If the character is gay, and the play doesn’t really want to handle that issue, that’s one thing, but I think it’s a bit cheap to step away from the question and say “we’re not really supposed to discuss that.” I don’t know, that may sound pettty, but it would be nice to hear an opinion.
I have to admit, the guys sounded super cute though! Now to convince the boyfriend to go with me…
