We see social inequality everywhere. As much as it may upset us sometimes, there always is a certain amount of frustration, because we don’t know how to address the situation or even if it’s any of our business.
One thing I know for sure is that if gays, lesbians, bisexuals and trans folks are to secure their rights, they need their breeder and hetero friends to join in the fight. Martin Luther King Jr. said that the civil rights advances that came in the 1960s wouldn’t have come to pass if white folks didn’t step up to the plate. LBJ, a southern white president, signed into law some of the most powerful and revolutionary desegregation laws of its time.
So here’s the plan. Our pals at PFLAG ask asking you, the “straight” people to join the gay rights movement. We need you. We want you to speak for us when we are not around to do so. We want you to march in our parades. We need your presence in our fight for Equality.
On today’s show, the national President of PFLAG (that’s Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) John Cepek and the unofficial “first lady” Char Cepek join us to talk about their new campaign, “Straight for Equality.”
A recent poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press (a non-partisan “fact tank”) done in May of 2007 stated that 4 out of 10 Americans have close friends or relatives who are gay. People see the frustrations their gay friends and family have at school, work and politically but may be unsure about how to address it.
So we want the 25% of the audience that listens to this show on a regular basis (that means you Mike Carino, Glen and Sarah) to take the Straight for Equality Pledge and commit to making the world a better place for everyone.
That means coming out as a straight person who supports GLBT rights, speaking up in support of GLBT people and joining in the fight for change.
Listen as we talk with John and Char Cepek about dealing with the inevitable issue that you’ll be seen as queer if and when you’ll speak up for the rights of others, the future of gay rights and slogans straight people can use to display their gay pride.
John’s been using “Straight but not narrow” and “Straight but not normal” for years. Do you have any of your own? Post them on the comments below.
Join us this Wednesday at Sidetrack at 6pm as Marc Felion and myself, Fausto Fernós are joined by Andy Shaw, Rick Aiello and other listeners, friends and fans.
We’d love to bring the parade to you, so we’re asking you our listener to pitch in! We’d like to take into the field a Sanyo HD1000 camera which allows us to capture our local flavor in ways you can’t begin to imagine.
One of our lovely listeners, Barbara is matching funds donated between now and Halloween, so your money goes twice as far.
Your brass knuckles in the fight for your right to paaarty and rest- Feast of Fools!
