Get your booty in high gear people! The most famous drag queen in the world, RuPaul joins us for real on today’s show.
Well known for her 1993 chart topping release Supermodel, RuPaul Charles is still going on strong as a drag queen, comedian, musician and filmmaker.
RuPaul literally became the first drag queen supermodel after the success of her original hit song “Supermodel” when MAC cosmetics launched their product line and made her their first cover girl. It’s impossible to measure the impact RuPaul’s career has had on gay culture and music as the incredible success of his debut album permanently made drag queens a mainstream fixture in films, movies, music and television. As RuPaul says in the interview, be careful what you put out there because your dreams can come true.
On today’s show we talk to RuPaul from the city of Corpus Christi (birthplace of Selena) about her new film “Starrbooty,” a re-visioning of her 1987 original cult classic inspired by the works of Russ Meyer and John Waters. Back in the day when she was struggling to make it in New York City, RuPaul edited her own movie with two VCR decks and showed them around gay bars in the city.
Now she’s doubled her cock budget, brought on some fancy lights and cameras, but “Starrbooty” is a film true to its original spirit of drag queen mayhem and fun. Don’t expect good acting here or believable plots, just a lot of over the top drag queens, blacksploitation references and huge cocks.
Listen as RuPaul goes back, back BLACK to her roots to talk about about her early years in Atlanta Georgia, the costs of superstardom, her jousts with celebrities, being a lady in a man’s world, and the controversy surrounding her friendship with blackface comedian Shirley Q Liquor.
You don’t want to miss this show!
RuPaul’s new movie, Starrbooty, a re-visioning of her 1987 original cult classic is showing at Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival this Wednesday at 8pm at the Lakeshore Theater. RuPaul will be there in person after the screening to answer your questions, and a After-Party at Goose Island brewery will take place after the show. Get your tickets now, as seating is limited and the event is expected to sell out. Click here to buy tickets to the screening or the screening and the after-party. See you there!
If you can’t make it to the movie, RuPaul will also be signing her DVD at Circuit Nightclub in Chicago the following night, Thursday November 15th.

November 12, 2007 at 06:29Woo hoo! I’m so glad RuPaul is still out there, working it, and being as fabulous as ever! Ru was a wonderful interview– and it was great to hear what she’s doing these days. Starrbooty sounds like an instant cult/camp classic.
Congrats, Fausto and Marc, on another great celeb interview. Nobody does ‘em like you do!

November 12, 2007 at 07:44haha! great show guys! one of my movie buff friend, Jack, had just finished telling me about Rupaul’s remake of Starrbooty. I will have to go see it now that the FoF and Jack say it’s a must see!

November 12, 2007 at 09:47What impresses me most is how grounded and down to earth RuPaul is. He appreciates everything, and you hardly ever hear that in a celebrity. A very nice interview with a lot to think over for the listener. We’re lucky to have RuPaul representing us, and he definitely deserves our support. So buy Starbooty, put your favorite RuPaul jam on the iPod, and work bitches! Everybody say LOVE!

November 12, 2007 at 11:02Oh, this show got me so excited! I read Rupaul’s autobiography when I was in 7th grade. It was the first book I was motivated to really read from cover to cover. Ru’s message of love is really great, and this podcast was truly interesting. I can’t wait to see Starrbooty (for many reasons)!
I hope some of y’all in Chicago go to that after party on Thursday and take some pictures.

November 12, 2007 at 11:51Great interview with RuPaul. You guys were fantastic. I meet Ru at the showing of Starrbotty in Atlanta and she is a genuine and friendly person. Starrbooty is hilarious and nasty. Go See It!
RuPaul is right about today’s youth. They seemed to have been lulled into some kind of over-stimulated, consumerism-obsessed robots that buy what the Corporation tells them to buy. The FOF is the cure. Share the cure.
Cliff Dix says:
November 12, 2007 at 11:55By the way, RuPaul mentioned the Wizard of Oz in the interview today.
Just further proving my theory that the Wizard of Oz pops up in your life everyday in some form.
Gary T says:
November 12, 2007 at 13:02Really great interview, and GREAT GUEST!!! I’ll have to get my copy of Starbooty on the 28th when RuPaul is signing them in the Castro. I loved the interview because RuPaul seemed so genuine and caring.
On the Shirley Q Liquor note, Chuck Knipp also does the character Betty Butterfield which I think is better than Shirley Q Liquor where he makes fun of post menopausal pill popping white trash looking for a church. I guess because he is white, he doesn’t get as much flack for making fun of white people. I saw him do Shirley & Betty and the act wasn’t mean spirited at all, just like RuPaul said. I think if you go in with an open mind, it is situational humor just like any other comedian. The big leap is to get beyond the makeup, and our own prejudices.
Mr_Noyes says:
November 12, 2007 at 13:21Jesus, I feared Ru would rip you a new one after your phone prank. It’s so nice that she did not take it personal. Although, she is a drag queen after all - better watch out if she invites you to some desolate lodge in the woods for a “special” interview.
Mike D-troit says:
November 12, 2007 at 13:50Thanks for taking my question. Funny how when Ru Answered it felt as if she was speaking to me. what a trip.

November 12, 2007 at 14:31I totally loved this show! I am happy you guys got RuPaul on. I think RuPaul made valuable contributions. The first was when she commented on Shirley Q Liqour’s work, I found what she had to say very insightful, thank you for putting it out there that just because we are gay does not necessarily mean that we are incapable of deep thoughts! Also I especially LOVED when she spoke about people using her signature line “You betta work!” to greet her. I really believe she hit it spot on when she said that she believes people are simply acknowledging the God-Self in her. I had that very experience several years ago with RuPaul. We were both at a mutual friend’s 50th Birthday Part in LA 8 years ago, I was just chicken at the time (18years old, I’m 27 now). One of my friends said to me there’s RuPaul, I got so star-strucked, I was paralysed by her very presence and I begged him to ask her for an autograph for me. Ru, I just wanna say I was I had the courage to approach you myself. Thanks fo rall the work you have done for the community…keep working BITCH! (that came from a place of LOVE!)
PupDon says:
November 12, 2007 at 14:38Yeah, me n’ Ru, we both like toast. We’re like kindred spirits. I think I swooned when she said that.
Cliff Dix, I like the idea of the Wizard of Oz being in your life every day. I’ve often equated my coming out experience, and the coming out of a lot of people, to Dorothy’s journey. I didn’t realize I was gay until about 22. And even then, I had a hard time dealing with it. It took me about four years of self-loathing, fear, shame, you name it. And once I was okay with it I realized how much time I wasted with all the crap I put myself through. I wished someone could have just told me early on what it was going to be like once I was out and okay with everything but it’s just like those damn ruby slippers. Even if Glinda had told Dorothy to click her heels, Dorothy would have thought she was on crack. So she wasn’t going to be able to use the slippers until she went on the journey. Now, everyone’s journey will be different, some longer and some very short, but only when you go through it go you get the ruby slippers and find “home”.
Btw, Cliff, are you as excited about Tin Man as I am? ![]()

November 12, 2007 at 16:31I have always loved Rupaul, I am so glad that you got her on the show!
I manage a small auto parts store, and listen to the show while I am making deliveries. I have an fm transmitter for my ipos and it automatically starts playing when you start the car.
Well…. i was making a delivery today and was spending to much time going over things with the customer. One of her very cute young mechanics came in and asked if I would move my car, his boss told him to move it for me and I gave him my keys forgetting about the show. 10 minutes later I was waiting for my keys and the mechanic was no where in sight. I found my car, unlocked with the keys on the seat. As I started it I remembered the show and noticed that my radio was turned off. I turned it back on and there was RuPaul talking about needing a dick in her mouth. As I drove away I noticed the mechanic staning there red-faced and scowling at me. And I didnt hear back from the customer today.
Oh Well!!!!!!!!!
Leslie Ann Levine says:
November 12, 2007 at 16:49This was a wonderful interview. I was so surprised by how approachable Ru turned out to be! Plus, showing my friends the album art and watching their faces when I told them the picture was of a drag queen was hysterical. I spent my whole morning listening to the show and giggling. I don’t know much about Ru, but this has definitely piqued my interest!

November 12, 2007 at 17:25Wow!!!! Another great show and so Blissfull. RuPaul should be a preacher.

November 12, 2007 at 17:46Loved the show guys!!! We had the absolute pleasure of seeing and hearing Ru and Mike’s Q&A after Starrbooty showed at the Atlanta Gay Film Festival. What a trip: she introduced the film AND talked after it!! She’s FANTASTIC!!
For those who were able to go, she also joined the crowd that night at WetBar in Atlanta—it was a little too late for CLiff and me though…DAMN we’re old!!! Keep up the fantastic shows guys and remember… you just gotta WORK!!!
Henry says:
November 12, 2007 at 17:51Oh my Buddy! I did a double take when i saw todays guest. It was a good show. I was taken by how down to earth RuPaul seems to be. Great job on yet another successful show!

November 12, 2007 at 18:57I really do think RuPaul might be missing out his/her calling as a pundit/political/social speaker. I’d pay to see RuPaul go on the lecture circuit. Wouldn’t you?
jose fournier says:
November 12, 2007 at 19:18Yes Fausto i would. I could listen to him for hours. With all his past experience, he could touch so many people.
I think that he is from A PLACE OF LOVE!
Hey PumDOn i will be in that line with you! And he better have Nutela for my toast. lol

November 12, 2007 at 19:32I was only a little kid when RuPaul was around and I don’t know how I got this stigma about her, but growing up I was always afraid of this “odd looking woman”. I am so glad to have listened to today’s show because it’s made me want to look up more of RuPaul’s stuff.
I think RuPaul would have a good sister show with that Pakistani trannie that has a talkshow.

November 12, 2007 at 23:50One of my happiest memories in high school was riding in a car with my friends, one of whom was a big flaming gay boy, and singing or lip syncing to “Supermodel”. RuPaul, you were my introduction to gay life, and this was long before Elton or Ellen came out of the closet. Thanks for being there, girl! I love you!

November 13, 2007 at 02:27I didn’t know who RuPaul was until fairly recently - one of the downsides of living in Australia (and under a rock!) - so it’s fantastic to be able to get to know her a little better through you guys. Thank you!

November 13, 2007 at 19:32Thank you so much for having RuPaul on your show! I think it has been one of my favorite shows to date. What a great insight to learn that on one hand RuPaul has incredible well thought out insights and understanding of gay social issues, and on the other hand can talking about how he loves sucking cock. How fabulous it is to be gay! It was also great learning more about RuPaul, since I was coming out while “Supermodel” was being released and it brings back great memories of coming out and the joy of being able to accept myself.

November 14, 2007 at 04:52I wish RuPaul could become a regular on the show. I kept this saved up for two days before I listened to it - I really wanted to cheer myself up.
And I agree with what was said here earlier - R. is SO down to earth! I think that may be one of the best features in a human being ever.
boygonemad says:
November 14, 2007 at 14:40Fantastic show!!! I had been hearing you call Shirley Q a black faced commedian, and I thought that it was a figure of speech. I’ve known of Shirley Q For years, but only through cips found online. She sounds so authentic, it never occured to me she might be white. Now that I know I had to figure out if I still thought the routines were funny. And god love Ru for keeping it real. It is funny, and I told myself to quit being so serious. I’m going to buy the Starbooty dvd and soundtrack tonight.
Jonas Åstrøm says:
November 14, 2007 at 15:05Wasn’t it also RuPaul who said on your show that there was a time when America was brighter as a nation? As in more enlightened, accepting and aware - and that things were somewhat reverting these days… Sometimes I think the very same thing is true about Norway (and large parts of Europe in general.) The voting turnout in most Western democracies have decreased dramatically, to an extent where many researchers say it may actually be a threat to democracy in itself.
During WWII many of the world’s democracies was under great pressure and in fact put aside completely for years. Right after the war ended the voter turnout was at its highest, which could only be seen as a healthy sign of a democracy. Maybe we had more enlightened people back then? Maybe large disasters make us rethink and reflect on our values and what’s good and important in life?

November 14, 2007 at 19:49Fantastic show! So great to hear Ru’s thoughts on Shirley Q Liquor. Intent is everything, and I never felt that Shirley was coming from a place of hate. The tyranny of political correctness can be as stifling and limiting intellectually as the tyranny of racism. free your minds and allow yourself to laugh.
They get it right in Avenue Q - everyones a little bit racist, and if we understood that and give each other a break we would get so much farther along in the quest to really just live together in some kind of harmony.
I have an autographed photo of Ru that I got from her back in the day at a small concert in Salt Lake City, it’s framed and hanging in the little toilet alcove in my bathroom. It makes me smile every time I see it.

November 16, 2007 at 05:36One thing Ru said that i found ironic. She bitched about the “the youth and that all they are worried about are their Ipods” but when you asked her about her Ipod it was like….” i’ve got 17,000 songs on my 160gb ipod….” I mean thats like bitching about tv rotting our minds when you’ve got your TIVO filled when your shows. I don’t think the youth are the only ones that are obsessive about their Ipods. I mean the 160 gb ipod just came out in September. I just think that it is an easy thing for everyone to bitch about “the youth of today” being all bad and stuff its just not fair. No bad going out to her i love Ru but that comment just bugged me.

November 20, 2007 at 13:52Hi Fausto & Marc
Although I am not an active member of the fof community, I am a long time fan. I have been listening since Dec 2005, and I probably have heard almost every show since then! Without you guys, my life would be a whole lot more boring, void of a lot of incredible (and sometimes uselss) information, and basically a lot less interresting
This show, however, must be one of the highlights of all!
Congrats on reaching this milestone.
Rupaul is amaizing!
Keep on going & working it…..

November 20, 2007 at 16:24I didn’t understand this concept of… “sometimes useless.” Are you trying to say some things that uttered on the show is… not valid in the real world?
Julz says:
November 20, 2007 at 23:03Useless in the normal course of everyday life. Like, Kowing that a cat in China can mew it’s own name fun to know - but useless in day to day living…

November 25, 2007 at 12:01Congratulations on a really good show. Listening to you interview RuPaul really brought a smile to my face.
Regarding the incident with Mr. Television, I was in Japan at the time watching the award show with a Japanese family that sort of adopted me while I was there. They didn’t get the joke or the “witty repartee.” They didn’t understand that RuPaul was a female impersonator.
But I agree with RuPaul. That is ancient history.

November 28, 2007 at 04:28Thanks for another great show.
RuPaul is just so gorgeous. What a charming person. We’ve never heard her in an interview before but never would have guessed she would have been as unassuming and delightful as she is here.
She has some very interesting ideas and philosophies and I have to admit that it got me thinking about a few things. Very refreshing.
Now I’ve got to get the DVD. It sounds really fabulous.
Thank you for introducing Starrbooty to us and for bringing us RuPaul and all her delicious sassiness.
Kisses from Brisbane, Australia
