Stop the madness people! You know I really mean it when I start quoting Susan Powter in the show notes. But come on, how many repackaged pop songs in disguise as musicals are we going to have to endure?
Our hard core culturista Gregg Shapiro to talk about what he calls the “Mama Mia Effect.” Gregg says that unlike “Hairspray” “Avenue Q” and “Wicked” too many new productions that happen in theater are simply a collection of pop songs strung together with a loose plot. It’s just a lame excuse to do covers.
Producers seem to think they can leverage the popularity of the music into a cohesive show that audiences will love. With shows like “Mama Mia” (ABBA), “Moving Out” (Billy Joel) and “Roustabout” (Elvis)– new good original musicals have been hard to come by.
Even Julie Taymors new movie “Across the Universe” suffers from this problem as it awkwardly shoe-horns Beatles songs into the movie.
It’s just a matter of time before we see Air Supply’s greatest hits tied into a show titled “Making Love.” For the plot, the producers will use the doomed gay 1980s flick starring Harry Hamlin and Kate Jackson.
Stop it people! Write your own damn music. We want to not just hear your words but your melodies as well. If I want to listen to the oldies, I’ll turn on AM radio.
Also, what’s up with Tony Kushner’s odd musical “Caroline or Change?” The oddly titled show guarantees that people will just scratch their heads and move on. Was his attempt to write a musical about his black maid talking to the washing machine (no joke) just a feeble attempt to soothe his white guilt? Did he go mad from success?
Gregg Shapiro is getting ready to release his book of fabulous poetry but in the meantime he’s getting ready for his 30 year high school reunion.
For some odd reason, an unusually large percentage of his school chums turned out to be gay. Was it the fact that it was the film “Sixteen Candles” and “Risky Business” was shot at his high school or was it something else? Did Long Duck Long make everyone go gay or was it Molly Ringwald? Either way, Gregg is collecting research and perhaps may put out a book about it.
Listen as Gregg talks with Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós about Disney’s High School Musical, Hell winning the lottery and why it’s now safe to eat squirrels in New Jersey.

November 16, 2007 at 07:49I cannot wait to see the video of you and your mom cooking. I need a recipe for leftover turkey. Turkey and rice sounds great. I have an 18 lb turkey and it is only for me and my 2 cats.
