peacheschrist-is-goddessFellas, we’re doing it for the ladies today! Well, not really. It’s all about how you love the stuff for the ladies.

The popularity of the “Sex in the City Movie,” a film adaptation of the tv series that’s popular with gay men make us wonder what’s behind this love affair between gay men and movies made for straight women?

Peaches in the CityWhere does the term “chick flick” come from and what does it really mean? Although it once was used to degrade films made about women, it’s now seen as a legit genre all on it’s own.

The inclusion of gay comedians like comic Mario Cantone show that filmmakers these days take into consideration their loyal gay audiences.

On today’s show San Francisco Drag Queen Peaches Christ joins us to talk about those wonderful chick flicks every gay man must see. Movies made for women, about women but somehow strike a chord in every gay man’s heart.

What is the legacy of Hollywood’s leading ladies like Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe and the men behind these great women like directors George Cuckor, Russ Meyers and Roger Ebert!

Peaches Christ’s fabulous film series Midnight Mass starts it’s 2008 series kicks off on 4th of July weekend, Friday and Saturday night with the film Showgirls.

Peaches Christ is goddess, and this is Feast of Fools.

Hmmm.. I wonder if this show isn’t butch enough for our audience?

I love when Peaches is on the show. She fills me in on back stories, rumors and stuff I never knew. I have seen 13 of the movies listed above so I think that makes me one of the girls and I am not afraid to comment. My favorite movie on the list is 9 to 5 because I love my Dolly. To me it is the perfect chick flick with 3 powerful gay icons sticking it to “the man.” I am also one of those southern gay boys that loves my Steel Magnolias which is also Dolly. -Drink your juice Shelby!”

OH. MY. GOD. I love that picture of Marc and I. That is just so totally ill and wrong.

But yet somehow, it kinda works. We should totally do a SITC parody together.

You guys make a cute couple! Maybe you and I should trade Marc and Dupuis for some demented reality TV show.

Absolutely LOVED this show. Holy crap it was a long one– (And I like ‘em long, OW!)

I really enjoy hearing Peaches talk about these movies, most of which I have seen more than once. He talks about them with so much enthusiasm and reverence; but most importantly with such intelligence!

The idea that a movie is specifically geared toward one group of people is such an interesting concept, because it seems like almost every time the filmmakers try to pigeonhole a film to one group’s attention, another group springs up unexpectedly to claim it as theirs, too. 9 to 5, for instance, has always been one of my all-time favorites. I saw it in the theaters with my parents and instantly loved it. (I was 9 at the time!) If I had to guess how many times I’ve seen that film, I’d have to say it’s close to 100 times. And it never gets old.

The interesting thing about most of these films is that I watched most of them for the first time with my mom and/or dad. They would be in the living room and would call me and my sister out of our bedrooms and plop us in front of the TV to watch movies like “Some Like It Hot” or “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” or musicals like “My Fair Lady” or “Sound of Music.”

I watched “Mildred Pierce” with my mom on TV a few years ago while visiting her and I remember very clearly saying to her, “You know, Mom, this movie is so gay. It’s totally campy and reminds me so much of “Mommie Dearest.” And she agreed with me! My mom is so cool. :-)

I swear, next time I plan a trip to San Francisco, I’m planning it around a Midnight Mass event. I must experience this firsthand. In the meantime, it’s a pleasure to have Peaches on the Feast of Fools!!!

i love peaches christ!

And Steel Magnolias is one of my favorites.

“I do not see plays, because I can nap at home for free. And I don’t see movies ’cause they’re trash, and they got nothin’ but naked people in ‘em! And I don’t read books, ’cause if they’re any good, they’re gonna make ‘em into a miniseries. ” -Ouiser Boudreaux

Would love to see you guys go to San Francisco and cover the final night of Trannyshack, that would be incredible to witness.

Peaches Christ. every time i hear the name it reminds me of Mr. Slave from south park. But I digest. I was a little lost during this show cuase I am 19 and havn’t seen most of these movies but after hearing this I am totally heading out to rent a few. Thanks for all the insite and Peaches I totally vote for your SITC parody idea!!!

Well, Pretty Woman should be on it…I love that movie…its my all time favorite movie! I love you Peaches, good luck with Midnight Mass!!! And the Jane Russell part, if u put it in slow mode while the guys are dancing u can see things in their shorts, lol!!!! Dont you love the nude color shorts to make them look naked…lol! Another ALL TIME FAV Movie! I love Jane!!!

Much Love,
Kennidi

Peaches is fantastic guest. I could listen to you guys chat about film for hours, literally. Always informative, entertaining, and very smart. Thanks for a great show guys!

Thanks Everyone!

It’s weird but ever since doing that show I’ve been walking around thinking about all sorts of “chick flicks” we could have included but didn’t.

Sorry Kennidi, but I still don’t think “Pretty Woman” belongs on the list!!! It was just so popular and normal and somehow gays didn’t take to it. But maybe I’m wrong. Do gays love Pretty Woman? I mean, it does star another popular talking horse.

By the way Kennidi, love your new music!

And I totes agree with Trannylover that the boys should come out to SF so we can whoop it up for the Trannyshack finale. It’s also the same weekend as my Underground Film Fest. It’ll be very!

Wow! I thought for sure this one would spark a lot of debates, but often “chick flicks” make guys hide under the covers and not admit what they love. Hmmm! Sounds so closeted. There were tons you guys missed, but that’s half the fun.

One of my guilty pleasure chick flicks has to be FLASHDANCE. It’s a musical, it’s a mess, and it became fodder for a J-Lo video. Great movie about “fear of success” and torn shirts. It’s so damn gay when you think about it.

But thank you Peaches for not including any Sandra Bullock movies. I just can’t get in to her whole cannon of work.

And kind of random to include THE HANDMAIDS TALE. All the feminists railed against it because it changed the ending of the book so radically. She settled down to … gulp… raise a family with a man. That wasn’t cool. But props to perfect casting with Dunaway. I’d watch her in anything including that wretched SUPERGIRL that I secretly watch all the time.

I love Flashdance! How could you guys miss that classic movie? What a Feeling, Tis Believing. You can have it all now I’m dancing for my life. Or something like that.

I agree with Peaches- Pretty Woman is pretty awful! Long live Peaches Christ.

A movie that I would like to offer for future discussion is BOUND starring Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly. This movie drew me in and held on until the end as these two women plot to get rid of the man that was keeping them apart… along the same lines as DEAD GORGEOUS. The entire movie was sexy, sweaty and thrilling and I was bound watching until the end of the movie. If you watch this movie you may need a cigarette when it’s over.

Sam :-)

Yea for Peaches!!
My hubby and I love when you are on the show and you always inspire us to go out and watch great movies. This time we bought Rebecca and All about Eve to watch for the first time. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us!!!
