Remember this nut? He made an unscheduled guest appearance during Bob Dylan’s 1998 Grammy performance, with the cryptic phrase “Soy Bomb” inked on his lean, nude torso. No one stopped him for about a minute because they couldn’t tell if he was part of the act or not—with Bob Dylan, anything is possible. Michael Portnoy got away with it, too (maybe due to a lack of meddling kids?), with no charges pressed against him. Try this now, and you’d probably be shot dead before Bob got to the chorus.
I got all starstruck when I saw Michael at the Tompkins Square farmer’s market this weekend, then came home and watched the clip again. What seems most impressive now is that, unlike most TV-show crashers, Michael got right in the center of the screen and stayed there. Soy Bomb knows how to hit his mark! —John Q Sanchez
